The sight of spring!

Spring seems to have sprung! Well… Ok it’s technically still winter but here in Northern California with the temperatures in the 70’s, the hens laying like crazy, and the tender sprouts shooting up it certainly FEELS like spring!

The garden plot has been tilled and formed into rows and the tulip, daffodil and various other bulbs I planted months ago are rising up towards the sun. The spinach, cabbage, lettuce, beets, Swiss chard, and winter squash has been sowed and the tiny shoots are rising from the soil promising a bountiful harvest.

We also have a wild card sprout in the garden! It appears to be of the melon or squash family. Time will tell!

We also welcomed two new hens to the flock! Margaret Puffington and Katherine- Miss Puff the golden hen being a Buff Orpington- an English breed developed in Orpington, Kent which is in the south-east of England. Miss Kathy the black hen is a Langshan which is a breed that was developed in China. Both will lay a light brown egg with the Langshan laying a pink/purplish hued egg. We anxiously await for the hens to settle enough to be ready to lay for us!

How do I know what breed these hens are? You can easily discern a pure bred chicken by a few characteristics; eye color, feather color, sheen on the feathers, skin color, beak color, color of the legs and feet, the presence or lack of feathers on the legs (shanks), egg color, comb shape and size. Body shape and size and other more obvious characteristics also help. Also you can generally tell what color egg a hen will lay by the color of their earlobes! Brown eggers have red earlobes and white eggers have white earlobes!

Thats all for now! A busy horse riding season ensues so stick around for some exciting stuff with the horses too!
